Young Carers

Whole School Commitment

Mrs S Simnett

Young Carers School Operational Lead, A105

A Young Carer is a person under 18 who looks after someone in their family or a friend who is ill, disabled, or has a mental health problem or an addiction.

The tasks and level of caring undertaken by young carers can vary according to the nature of the illness or disability, the level and frequency of need for care, and the structure of the family as a whole.

Young carers often take on practical and/or emotional caring responsibilities that would normally be expected of an adult. These can include:

  • Shopping, cooking, cleaning
  • Managing medicines or money
  • Providing personal care
  • Helping get people out the house
  • Keeping an eye on someone
  • Providing emotional support

Lift Greensward is committed to meeting the needs of our Young Carers. We work in partnership with SCAFT (Supporting Carers and Families Together) who provide weekly support in school on a one to one basis or in group sessions externally.

We aim to help them attend and enjoy school in the same way as all our other students and help them to achieve their full potential.

Lift Greensward has a designated Young Carers operational lead with responsibility for Young Carers and their families. Students and families can contact her as follows:

Mrs Suzy Simnett, Young Carers School Operational Lead, A105

We only share information with professionals and agencies on a need to know basis in order to support students and their families.

We actively seeks feedback and ideas from young carers and their families to shape and improve support.
